Code of Conduct for Orange Glen Students

Welcome to Sociology 100 for Orange Glen students. In order to maintain a respectful, inclusive, and conducive learning environment, I have established the following code of conduct. By adhering to these guidelines, we can ensure that everyone's experience is positive and enriching.

1. Respectful Communication:

   - Treat all classmates, the instructor, and guest speakers with respect and courtesy, both in-person and in digital communications.

   - Engage in thoughtful and constructive discussions, even when opinions differ. Do not express personal opinions, especially on politics or religion, in classroom discussions. Stick to topics raised in lecture and readings. Do not introduce material from outside sources unless it is from peer reviewed articles or newspapers of record. Be ready to cite your sources.

   - While in class do not talk to others during lecture. When you wish to speak, raise your hand. Always be respectful

   - Avoid using offensive language, discriminatory remarks, or personal attacks.

2. Electronics:

  - Turn off and stow all electronic devices, including cell phones, laptops, and tablets, before class. No electronics: that means anything that connects to the Internet.

3. Lecture Notes:

  - You are required to take lecture notes during class. If you don’t know how to do this well, the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) can help you. I will review your lecture notes from time to time.

4. Open-mindedness:

   - Approach new concepts and perspectives with an open mind, embracing the diversity of ideas presented in the course.

5. Academic Integrity:

   - Submit only your original work for assignments, projects, and assessments.

   - Properly cite all sources used in your assignments, adhering to academic honesty standards.

   - Do not engage in plagiarism, cheating, or any form of academic dishonesty.

6. Confidentiality and Privacy:

   - Respect the privacy of your classmates and refrain from sharing personal information they disclose during class discussions.

   - Do not record or distribute class content, discussions, or materials without explicit permission from the instructor.

7. Inclusivity and Sensitivity:

   - Embrace diversity in all its forms, including race, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, etc.

   - Be mindful of potential cultural sensitivities when discussing various topics.

8.  Attendance and Participation:

   - Regularly attend and actively participate in class sessions, both in-person and online.

   - You are encouraged to respond to questions posed by the instructor. There are no wrong answers. Always raise your hand and be respectful.

   - If you have any questions about the lecture or anything about the class, do not hesitate to ask. You can also ask anything from the instructor after class.

  - You can also participate by emailing the instructor with any comments or questions about lecture.

   - Notify the instructor in advance if you cannot attend a class due to unavoidable circumstances.

9. Feedback and Improvement:

    - Provide constructive feedback to your instructor in a respectful manner.

    - Be open to receiving feedback and use it to enhance your learning experience.

By adhering to this code of conduct, we can create an inclusive and respectful atmosphere that promotes effective learning and growth. Your active participation and commitment to these principles are crucial to the success of this class.
